When you get connected with an Internet Service Provider you will either be provided a static IP address or a dynamic IP address, depending on the nature of service you require. Most IP addresses assigned today by Internet Service Providers to customers are dynamic IP addresses. It’s more cost-effective for the ISP and you. These dynamic IP Addresses are provided with the help of DHCP which resides within the routers.
It would be simple and good if every computer that connects to the Internet could have its own static IP number. The users of the internet have grown exponentially, so there are not enough static IP Addresses to go around. To get rid of that problem, many Internet service providers limit the number of static IP addresses they allocate and economize on the remaining number of IP addresses they have by temporarily assigning an IP address to a requesting Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) computer from a pool of IP addresses. You will be assigned a WAN IP Address from your ISP and further DHCP of your router/modem will assign you dynamic IPs to the computers which are connected to the router/modem.
Once the user disconnects from the Internet, their dynamic IP address goes back into the IP address pool so it can be assigned to another user. Even if the user reconnects immediately, they will not be assigned the same IP address from the pool. There are times, however, when users who connect to the Internet using dynamic IP wish to allow other computers to locate them. In that case, they would need a static IP address. They can ask their ISP to provide static IP Address which will probably involve an additional monthly fee.
When Should I use Static IP?

- It’s good for dedicated services such as mail, FTP and VPN servers.

When Do I use Dynamic IP?
- When several computers on an internal network with internet access on all of them, Dynamic IP addresses allow several devices to share limited address space which is available.
- When a single computer which is connected to suppose your head office on a one-way Virtual Private Network
