2 Ways to Reset Windows 7 Administrator Password With CD/USB if You Forgot it

  1. Insert Windows 7 Installation CD into the CD/DVD-ROM and reboot your computer.
  2. Boot into the BIOS Setup. Set boot order for the DVD drive first and proceed to save and exit the BIOS.
  3. When booted from the disc, press SHIFT + F10 keys at the setup screen. A Command Prompt window will open.

  1. There, you will need to replace the Sticky Keys application (sethc.exe) with cmd.exe. This can be done with the following commands:

move c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe.bak

copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

  1. Next, restart the machine by running the command “wpeutil reboot”.
  2. When you are back to the login screen, press the SHIFT keys 5 times and a Command Prompt will open immediately. Now type the following command to reset your lost administrator password:

net user Administrator new_password_here
